No False Promises!
"I’ll make it happen, just tell me what you need!"
Sounds like a dream recruiter, right? Someone who will do anything to get you what you want? Except, this is where things will go wrong.
The problem isn’t enthusiasm, it’s over-promising and under-delivering.
- Candidates get oversold on a role: told there’s career progression, amazing culture, and work-life balance, only to find out the reality is 14-hour days and a revolving door of employees.
- Employers get oversold on a candidate: a recruiter assures them they’ve found the “perfect fit,” but after two months, it turns out the candidate wasn’t aligned with the role at all.
Recruiters overpromise to both sides, just to close the deal faster, without thinking about long-term fit.
The result? Disappointment, job mismatches, and short-lived hires.
Honesty > Speed
A good recruiter doesn’t just “sell” an opportunity. They match people and companies based on real expectations. If that means telling a company that their salary isn’t competitive enough, or advising a candidate to rethink their career direction - that’s what should be done.
💡 Candidates:
You don’t want just any job. You want a role that actually aligns with your goals, values, and lifestyle. Don’t fall for exaggerated promises just because they sound good, dig deeper.
🔹 Ask about real career progression (not just what’s on paper).
🔹 Find out why the role is open, what happened to the last person in it?
🔹 Be honest about your expectations. The right job will fit you, not just the other way around.
💡 Employers:
Many candidates don’t just want a paycheck. They want to know what they’re walking into. Over-glorifying your company will backfire when new hires discover the reality.
🔹 Be upfront about the challenges, not just the perks.
🔹 Don’t say “great career growth” if there’s no real structure for promotion.
🔹 If work-life balance isn’t a strength, be honest about it. The right candidate will still come, and just for the right reasons.
At the end of the day, honest recruitment is about setting proper expectations from the start. You don’t need to say “Yes” to everything just to keep people happy. The right match takes time, transparency, and trust.
Recruitment isn’t about quick wins. It’s about lasting placements. Let’s stop making promises we can’t keep.
