Hiring isn’t as straightforward as we’d like it to be. Clients often start with a very clear idea of their “perfect candidate.” But as the process unfolds—through interviews, team discussions, and reflecting on business needs—priorities and expectations can shift.
One of my recent clients began a hiring search with an idealistic checklist: the right character, the perfect industry experience, specific skills, and a tight salary range. Over weeks of interviewing more than a dozen candidates, she started seeing things differently.
Due to evolving business needs and other internal dynamics, she decided she needed someone with a different profile. This meant that the candidates we’d already screened and interviewed, many of whom were great, were no longer suitable - and we had to restart the search from scratch. It was frustrating for me as I had spent hours searching and talking to many potential candidates. I also felt frustrated and sorry for the candidates as they had put in the effort to prepare and took time out for the interview. The hiring process isn’t easy when moving targets are involved.

Changes like this don’t reflect poorly on you or your abilities. They’re usually a sign that the company is refining its needs as they gain clarity on the role. Stay patient and open to conversations, you never know when a seemingly lost opportunity might evolve into the perfect one down the line.
💡 Employers:
Unpredictability is part of hiring, but staying in constant communication with your recruiter can help avoid wasted time and effort. Be upfront about what you think you want, but also let them in on changes as they happen. This will help tailor the process without scrapping weeks of work or losing great candidates.
While it’s natural for expectations to shift, transparency and adaptability can turn potential frustrations into learning opportunities.
